What is an Arc Flash Coverall? An Arc Flash Coverall is a piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect workers from the thermal hazards of an Arc Flash, which is a sudden release of electrical energy. Arc flash coveralls provide comprehensive body coverage, reducing the risk of injury.
-
How does an Arc Flash Coverall work?Constructed from flame-resistant materials, Arc Flash Coveralls provide comprehensive body coverage, reducing the risk of injury. They feature reinforced stitching and specialised closures for enhanced protection. An arc flash coverall functions as a protective barrier, effectively isolating the wearer from the harmful effects of an arc flash event, thereby ensuring their safety in environments where electrical hazards are a concern.
-
What materials are the AHP001 Arc Flash Coveralls made of?Arc flash coveralls are typically made from flame-resistant fabrics such as Nomex, Protex, or other similar materials that are designed to resist ignition and provide thermal protection. The fabric we use is fully certified inherently flame retardant, made from 40% Protex (Modacrylic) / 24% FR Viscose / 20% Polyester / 10% Cotton / 4% Aramid / 2% Antistatic.
-
How do I choose the right Arc Flash coverall for my application? To select the right Arc Flash coverall, start by assessing the potential arc flash energy levels in your work environment. Choose a coverall with an appropriate arc rating (cal/cm²) for adequate protection. Look for flame-resistant materials like ours, which also ensure comfort and durability. Consider fit, sizing, and features like reinforced stitching and double closures for optimal protection. Check for compliance with safety standards like NFPA 70E and ASTM F1506. Factor in compatibility with other PPE and understand maintenance requirements. Always ensure that PPE is the last layer of defence, with all risks being mitigated and considered before works begin.
-
What is an Arc rating? An Arc rating, measured in cal/cm² (calories per square centimeter), assesses the level of protection provided by flame-resistant (FR) clothing against electric arc flash hazards. It indicates the amount of thermal energy a fabric can withstand before causing a second-degree burn injury. Choosing FR clothing with an arc rating matching or exceeding potential energy levels in your work environment is crucial for safety.
-
How often should Arc Flash Coveralls be replaced?Arc flash coveralls should be inspected regularly for wear and damage. They should be replaced if they show signs of wear, damage, or if they no longer meet the required safety standards. It is also important to follow the care instructions meticulously. It is the responsibility of the wearer and/or employer to maintain correct usage, storage, care and also carry out their own risk assessment to ensure this garment meets the level of protection required.
-
Can I wash Arc Flash Coveralls?Yes, our Arc flash coveralls can be washed, but it's important to follow the manufacturer's care instructions to ensure the flame-resistant properties are not compromised. The AHP001-101 and AHP001-102 are tested to withstand a max of 5 wash cycles. See our wash and care instructions here.
-
Can Arc Flash Coveralls be customised? Some manufacturers offer customisation options for Arc Flash Coveralls, including adding company logos, reflective tape, and other features. However, any customisation should not compromise the protective properties of the garment. It is also important that any customisation is within the scope and limit of the certification of the garment to ensure it continues to conform. Our coveralls can be customised in a number of ways, you can get in touch to discuss further. Our coveralls are certified in an extremely wide range of sizes from S-6XL and in 4 different leg lengths. See our size guide here.
